Abstract [en] : This research covers the contemporary music producer’s role of facilitating creativity in a studio environment and how the producer works to do so. The reason for this is to assist and further the understanding of producers for both young producers as well as young audio engineers as they might work as or with a producer when entering the business. The aim of this study is to create a list of techniques that professional contemporary music producers use in order to facilitate creativity. A literature review was made to outline and present key points in modern creativity research as well as the history of the music industry. Examining the literature revealed two major perspectives of creativity; the romantic ideal – explained as a divine power – and the sociocultural – explained as a result of social structures. Since the producer is often employed to facilitate and oversee creativity it seems as if the sheer existence of the producer conflicts with the romantic ideal. This because facilitating divine power is undoubtedly anything major companies would employ a producer for. Next, an ethnographic study using structured interviews was conducted with four professional producers to find common themes and concepts and thus constructing relevant techniques out of these together with the reviewed literature. 13 concepts were constructed through analysis of the interviewees responses, sorted in two different themes – Behavioral and Practical. These concepts were then molded into the sought after techniques, which can be used as a music producer’s toolbox, applied when deemed necessary. A list of 6 techniques is presented, all coinciding with sociocultural ideals. Finally a comparison between the themes and concepts found in the interviews and of the findings in the reviewed literature was made.
