Abstract: We consider a broad class of interference coordination and resourceallocation problems for wireless links where the goal is to maximize the sum offunctions of individual link rates. Such problems arise in the context of, forexample, fractional frequency reuse FFR for macro-cellular networks anddynamic interference management in femtocells. The resulting optimizationproblems are typically hard to solve optimally even using centralizedalgorithms but are an essential computational step in implementing rate-fairand queue stabilizing scheduling policies in wireless networks. We consider abelief propagation framework to solve such problems approximately. Inparticular, we construct approximations to the belief propagation iterations toobtain computationally simple and distributed algorithms with low communicationoverhead. Notably, our methods are very general and apply to, for example, theoptimization of transmit powers, transmit beamforming vectors, and sub-bandallocation to maximize the above objective. Numerical results for femtocelldeployments demonstrate that such algorithms compute a very good operatingpoint in typically just a couple of iterations.
