Abstract [en] : Purpose. The purpose of this study was to describe how occupational therapists are reasoning when implementing assistive cognitive support in the habilitation services, and to describe their experiences of the importance of such interventions. A review of the literature shows good evidence for assistive cognitive support to enhance independence for people with cognitive disabilities. However, very little research has been done regarding the reasoning of occupational therapists in this area. Method. A qualitative study was conducted, based on semi-structured interviews with seven occupational therapists working in the habilitation services, both with underage and adult clients. The transcribed material was then processed through qualitative content analysis to identify codes and categories. Result. The reasoning of occupational therapists could be condensed to three tracks: Reasoning to generate a common viewpoint, usage focused reasoning, and reasoning that supports change and motivation. Besides this, the concept of client-centering was a central theme in each category. Conclusion. These types of reasoning are used simultaneously by the occupational therapists to facilitate the implementation of cognitive support. The study also shows that the client’s network plays an important part during the entire process, and in the continuous usage.
