Abstract [en] : In the competitive manufacturing industry, it is important to have effective processes and keep down costs while maintaining high quality in order to offer attractive products at competitive prices. The philosophy of Lean Production is to eliminate all forms of waste that do not create value for the customer. The origins of Lean Production can be traced to the automotive industry, and the Japanese Toyota Production System. The concept of the system was based on an efficient production in order to meet the competition from major U.S. competitors who could benefit from economies of scale in mass production. One of the features of the Toyota Production System was storing the material close to the production in so-called supermarkets. The concept of supermarkets is taken from the U.S. consumer supermarkets, where store shelves are replenished whereafter customers are picking goods from the shelves.GE Healthcare in Umeå, Sweden, manufactures medical equipment for research and the pharmaceutical industry and use supermarkets in its internal inventory structure. Production can be characterized as varied both in terms of volumes and products. The overall production volume can be regarded as low. Given that supermarkets originate from the automotive industry, which is characterized by high production volumes with low variability, it was of interest to examine the the use of supermarkets at an industry with low volumes and high variability. The aim of the study was therefore to investigate the conditions for the use of supermarkets in a volume and product diversified manufacturing environment.The study was carried out by conducting semi-structured interviews of employees and participant observations of work processes. The number of respondents was 27 and the study focused on the flow of materials linked to supermarkets. Thereafter, data collected from interviews and observations were analyzed based on theories in areas such as Lean Production, inventory control and material management.The study showed that the use of supermarkets in a diversified production can be problematic. The business in the study demands inventory accuracy in order to plan the production well. The open supermarkets, however, allows that unauthorized picking and erroneous material transactions can be performed. This can lead to major disruptions in production due to material shortages.The following recommendations are intended to improve materials management within existing warehouse structure at the studied business:•Establish material improvement groups•Classification of inventory turnover for item groups•Withdrawal of balance on two-bins when picking from stockThe recommendations do however not solve the problem of erroneous transactions but can help to deal with other problems at the site, such as communication between functions and miscalculations of balance in the storage system.
