This book spans 300 years of American history, tracing two farm families, the Mortimores from the British Isles and the Limbaughs from Germany.  Both struggled against the odds to achieve stability and success in a raw and often discordant new society, where opportunities to settle new land were many but the resources-and luck-needed to exploit them were often scarce. Comparing past and present highlights two themes found throughout the book. One is the contrast between expectations and outcomes that often characterize family farming. Another is the continuity of fundamental values and beliefs, despite constantly changing circumstances, that passed from generation to generation.
