Abstract

The contributions of innovations, factor endowments andinstitutions to American industrialization are examinedthrough analysing the rise of the American portland cementindustry. Minerals abundance contributed in multiple waysto the spectacular rise of the industry from the 1890s.However, the results of a structural econometric analysis ofentry suggests geological surveys, institutions highlighted byDavid and Wright, played a contributing rather than criticalrole in the American portland cement industry overcomingincumbent European portland cement and American naturalcement producers.
