Abstract : The major part of dislocation theory has been developed for dislocations in continuous media and the discrete or atomic structure of the medium was not taken into account. Heidenreich and Shockley were the first to point out the close relationship between the crystal structure and the core structure of dislocations. They postulated on geometrical grounds that glide dislocations in face centred cubic crystals should be dissociated into partial dislocations connected by a stacking fault. The purpose of this introductory lecture is to show how the concept of Heidenreich-Shockley has been generalized by introducing new concepts. — Non planar dissociation of screw dislocations in the B. C. C. structure. — Synchro-shear process. — Zona1 dislocations. These concepts will be illustrated by means of a number of case studies.
