Abstract : The mathematics notebook of the student is a very usual tool in Spain, but, at secondary level, students are usually free to develop and use it as they want. Here, we put our attention on a particular aspect: the kinds of comments the students add in their notebooks when they are writing in them. As a first step, we have carried out a case study in which we compare the notebooks of two high school students with high grades. There are some similarities, like the large amount of comments, which link different concepts, but, also, important contrasts related to the role of the notebook.
