Archaeological excavations continued at castrum Vrbovec, covering the south-western and western part of the site, outside the boundaries of the town’s centre. The western perimeter wall and a part of the southwestern wall of the defence tower were investigated and cleaned. The investigations have resulted in a clearer definition of the plan of the town, the discovery of new structures, layers and finds Fig. 1, 5. The western perimeter wall of the town has been damaged in the lower section, as a result of its having caved in due to erosion of the loose bedrock Fig. 2-4. The south-western wall of the defence tower has very large stone blocks Fig. 6, 7, 9. The investigations mostly reached the level of the 13th century horizon. The younger investigated layers yielded numerous fragments of ceramic vessels, stove tiles, glass and metal objects wrought iron nails and other objects and animal bones. Especially noteworthy are finds such as a Loštice beaker, a stone mould for gun bullets from the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century Fig. 8, a fragment of a ceramic cup with stamped decoration, a knife blade, an iron fire-striker, a part of iron bits and an iron horse-shoe.
