Agricultural irrigation in southwestern Georgia started in the mid-1970s and has become one of the most important type of water use in the region. Easy access to both surface water and groundwater aquifer made it possible to have large scale irrigation operations. Much interest has been focused on the impact of such operations on in-stream flow in the lower reaches of the Flint River and its major tributaries. Using a surface water hydrological model BASINS-HSPF and groundwater model MODFE, we made an effort to understand the interactions between groundwater and surface water in the Lower Flint HUC-8 Unit. The surface water hydrological model has been calibrated and validated with surface water observation.
