We present a new method for the calculation ofthe dispersion diagrams of general nonuniform waveguides. Themethod is based on the spatial Fourier transform SFT of theelectromagnetic field distribution along the guiding direction. Wedemonstrate the validity and robustness of the SFT techniqueusing several test cases. As an application, we apply the method toanalyze the dispersion of biperiodic photonic crystal waveguidesand show that the guiding bandwidths of these waveguides can besignificantly enhanced by a proper choice of the two distinctivespatial periods of the biperiodic waveguides.
