Abstract : A finite element method is used to determine the tensile stress concentration factors and the interlaminar shear stresses close to a failed ply in a woven carbon reinforced epoxy laminate under tensile loading. Ply failure is modelled by a reduction in stiffness in the loading direction. Different reductions in stiffness, representing either matrix break-up or fibre tow fracture are studied and the redistributed stress system, for the case where delamination follows initial ply failure, is also determined. The results of the theoretical analyses are discussed in the light of experimental data from tensile tests on a similar laminate at both a quasi-static and an impact rate of loading.
