Climate change, global warming, and energy crisis arecritical issues to be solved urgently in a global framework. Alternative energyand renewable energy technologies must be quickly developed to be substitutedfor fossil fuels like oil, gases, and coal. USA, UE, and Japan invested hugebudgets to develop biomass renewable energy technology. Their target is todevelop a commercial base large-scaled plant. On the other hand, in developingcountries, especially in rural areas, people who can access electricity isstill less than 70%, To decelerate or prevent global warming and improveelectrification in rural areas, a new technology for wood pyrolysis, whichrequires low manufacturing cost and less maintenance, and of which gases aredirectly applicable to the gas engine generator, is developedin a laboratory scale. This paper reports the performance of this new plant andeffects of several parameters on the performance. It is concluded that the newtechnology is quite feasible in rural areas, and upgrading of the plant iseasily possible.
