Object based storage devices OSDs elevate the levelof abstraction presented to clients, thereby permittingthem to offer methods for managing, sharing, and securing information that go beyond those offeredby block-based stores. The Object-OrientedStorage System O2S2 architecture presented andevaluated in this paper implements a virtualizationservice to provide object-based storage in a virtualizedenvironment. This service provides a virtualobject-based storage device vOSD to virtualmachines. The use of vOSDs permits the serviceprovider, i.e., the vOSD storage domain, to offerto guest virtual machines new methods for resourcemanagement and consolidation, without requiringthe purchase of physical storage devices that faithfullyimplement OSD functionality. Methods demonstratedin this paper include improved support foraccess control and for heterogeneity of storage devices.Advantages derived from such methods alsoinclude reduced complexity for end clients, i.e., guestVMs. A prototype PVFS-based O2S2 implementationdemonstrates that its enhanced services can beprovided at low cost, enabled in part by the effcientutilization of otherwise idle domain resources.
