In this paper we propose techniques to dynamicallydownsize or upsize a cache accompanied by cache set-lineshutdown to produce efficient caches. Unlike previous approaches, resizing is accompanied by a non-uniform remappingof memory into the resized cache, thus avoiding missesto sets-lines that are shut off. The paper first provides ananalysis into the causes of energy inefficiencies revealinga simple model for improving efficiency. Based on thismodel we propose the concept of -folding- memory regionsmapping to disjoint cache resources are combined toshare cache sets producing a new placement function. Foldingenables powering down cache sets at the expense of possiblyincreasing conflict misses. Effective folding heuristicscan substantially increase energy efficiency at the expenseof acceptable increase in execution time. We target the L2cache because of its larger size and greater energy consumption. Our techniques increase cache energy efficiencyby 20%, and reduce the EDP energy delay product by upto 45% with an IPC degradation of less than 4%. The resultsalso indicate opportunity for improving cache efficienciesfurther via cooperative compiler interactions.
