Magnetic active carbon was prepared by electroless plating with Pd-free activation by using coconut shell activated carbon as raw material. The effect of plating solution volume on metallic ratio was discussed. And the effects of metallic ratio on specific area and pore volume were investigated. The morphologies of active carbon before and after plated were observed by SEM and the composition of the layer was analyzed by EDS. The results show that metallic ratio increases with the plating solution volume increasing; And the metallic ratio improves from 0 to 16.37%, specific area and pore volume decrease from 942.86 m2-g to 859.12 m2-g and 0.462 mL-g to0.417 mL-g, respectively. At the same time, magnetism is to enhance the overall trend. After plated, the layer are more compact and continuous when metallic ratio increases. Metallic luster also brought about an increase. Pore structure of active carbon own still exists. In the layer, there is 97.4% nickel and 2.6% phosphorus, which indicates it is a low-phosphorus one.
