Abstract: This study demonstrated that the combination of ProdTect software and EuP EcoReport spreadsheet can be used to determine the environmental impacts at the product design phase. The former was designed to evaluate the end-of-life performance of the product which is measured in recycling rate and recycling potential; while the latter was formulated to estimate the environmental impacts during the product life. The products under study were four SOHO-level and four professional keyboard, video and mouse KVM switches. From ProdTect, we found all but one KVMs were qualified as -Stars- products; however, none but one was compliant to WEEE Directive. Whereas EcoReport showed that lighter products tend to consume less energy and water and produce less waste disposal than the heavier counterparts per unit; but a totally different pattern emerged from the recalculated results by unit weight of the product. However, both tools have shown that end-of-life and life performance can be improved by altering material or weight of parts at the design stage. Therefore, aided with ecodesign tools available on the market, environmental impacts of products can be determined relatively easy and as early as possible.
