Abstract: Using a quantum mechanical three-step model we present numerical calculationson the high-harmonic generation from four polyatomic molecules. EthyleneC$ 2$H$ 4$ serves as an example where orbital symmetry directly affects theharmonic yield. We treat the case of methane CH$ 4$ to address thehigh-harmonic generation resulting from a molecule with degenerate orbitals. Tothis end we illustrate how the single orbital contributions show up in thetotal high-harmonic signal. This example illustrates the importance of addingcoherently amplitude contributions from the individual degenerate orbitals.Finally, we study the high-harmonic generation from propane C$ 3$H$ 8$ andbutane C$ 4$H$ {10}$. These two molecules, being extended and far fromspherical in structure, produce harmonics with non-trivial orientationaldependencies. In particular, propane can be oriented so that veryhigh-frequency harmonics are favorized, and thus the molecule containsprospects for the generation of UV attosecond pulses.
