Abstract : Classical optical components, as they are miniaturized, are getting increasingly closer of the limit of diffraction while their fabrication is more and more challenging. Here, we review various nanostructures designs that, in contrast, are based on their ability to interact with the light at a deep subwavelength scale. They have promising properties such as the ability to reach artificial refractive index, to induce subwavelength phase pattern or to have a simpler fabrication.
