Abstract: We investigate the discovery potential of cubic kilometer neutrinoobservatories such as IceCube to set stringent limits on the forbidden decays$\eta\to u e\bar u e$ and $\eta\to u {\tau}\bar u {\tau}$. The signaturesfor these decays are cascade events resulting from the charged-currentreactions of $u e, u {\tau}$, $\bar u e$ and $\bar u {\tau}$ on nuclei insuch detectors. Background cascade events are mainly due to $u e$-s fromatmospheric $\mu$, $K^+$, and $K^{0} S$ decays and to a lesser extent fromatmospheric $u {\mu}$ neutral current interactions with nuclei. A directupper limit for the branching ratio $\eta \to u {e,\tau} \bar u {e,\tau}$ of$4.5\times10^{-4}$ at 90% CL can be achieved.
