The centrifuge is widely used in clinical laboratories for theseparation of components. For example in laboratories performingbiochemical analyses on body fluids it is routinely used to separateblood cells from plasma, to separate sediment from urine, tomeasure the volume fraction of erythrocytes in blood thehaematocrit, and to separate bound from free components in proteinbinding and immunoprocedures. Less routinely, centrifugation isused for separation of lipoproteins in reference procedures for theirmeasurement, separation of cellular components, and separation ofDNA fragments. Various quantities are used for the descriptionand the calculation of the separation processes at centrifugation.The aim of this document is to provide manufacturers and users ofcentrifuges with a list of quantities and units for centrifugationconsistent with the International System of Units, SI, andstandards of the International Organization for Standardization ISO.
