Abstract: Using new, high-resolution interferometric observations of the CO and HCNmolecules, we directly compare the molecular and ionized components of theinterstellar medium in the center of the nearby spiral galaxy IC342, on spatialscales of ~ 10pc. The morphology of the tracers suggests that the molecular gasflow caused by a large-scale stellar bar has been strongly affected by themechanical feedback from recent star formation activity within the central100pc in the nucleus of the galaxy. Possibly, stellar winds and-or supernovashocks originating in the nuclear star cluster have compressed, and likelypushed outward, the infalling molecular gas, thus significantly reducing thegas supply to the central 10pc. Although our analysis currently lacks kinematicconfirmation due to the face-on orientation of IC342, the described scenario issupported by the generally observed repetitive nature of star formation in thenuclear star clusters of late-type spiral galaxies.
