Information on Colorado's certificated school personnel and related information was gathered from the state's public school districts and Boards of Cooperative Services during fall 1997. This information shows that the fall 1997 average salary for Colorado's 37,840.9 full-time-equivalent (FTE) public school teachers was $37,240, which represented a 2.7% increase over the fall 1996 average salary of $36,271. The 1997 entry-level salary for beginning teachers in Colorado ranged from $17,016 to $27,186 with an average of $22,695. Of the 72,249.2 FTE certificated and noncertificated staff, 52.4% were classroom teachers. Classroom teachers, who numbered 37,840.9 FTE in fall 1997, increased 4.0% over 1996, while student membership increased 2.0% in the same period. However, student membership grew by 22.1% but FTE classroom teachers grew by only 18.4%. In fall 1997, females represented 70.8% of total teachers, 46.5% of school principals and assistant principals, and 18.5% of superintendents/assistant superintendents. Since 1987, the number of females employed in certificated positions increased by 32.1 percent while the number of males increased by 0.4 percent. American Indians, Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics represented 9.0% of Colorado's teachers, while these same groups made up 28.7% of the total student population. More than half (64.8%) of Colorado's teachers were 40 years of age or older. From 1987 to 1997 the number of teachers under 40 years of age declined by 4.4 percent while the number of teachers in the 40 and over age group increased by 43.6 percent.
