This report documents Los Angeles Community Colleges' student characteristics. It begins with a glossary providing specific definitions for the student characteristic criteria. Descriptive summaries and tables of student characteristic data are provided for the Los Angeles Community College District, Los Angeles City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Los Angeles Valley College, West Los Angeles College, and the Instructional Television Program. Data tables for each school include information on age by gender and age by ethnicity, ethnicity by gender and ethnicity by entering status, unit load by age and unit load by residence, goal by age and goal by ethnicity, goal by day/evening enrollment and goal by educational attainment, and language by ethnicity and language by residence. Highlights for the Los Angeles Community College district include the following: (1) 102,818 students enrolled in credit classes during census week in the fall of 1997; (2) full-time students, enrolling in 12 course units or more, comprised 28% of the student population; (3) 55% of Hispanics and 50% of Asians were "traditional" college age, while whites and blacks tended to be older; and (4) 36% of students indicated an intention to transfer.
