The California Community Colleges State Chancellor's Office released two reports,"The Effectiveness of California Community Colleges on Selected Performance Indicators" and "The Partnership for Excellence Fact Book," summarizing community college performance on a series of institutional performance indicators. This document relates the performance of the City College of San Francisco (CCSF) to the measures presented in the statewide reports for the following areas: transfer, degrees and certificates awarded, course completion rates, workforce development, and basic skills improvement. Between 1995-96 and 1997-98, the number of students who transferred from CCSF to the University of California and to California State Universities decreased by 4 percent and 24 percent, respectively, and by 6.2 percent and 6.5 percent statewide. During the same time period, the number of associate degrees awarded by CCSF decreased by 10.6 percent, while the number of certificates awarded increased by 24 percent, compared to 8.1 percent and 7.4 percent increases from community colleges across the state. Course completion rates for CCSF students increased by 0.4 percent during these two years, while the rates for community colleges in California was unchanged. Course completion rates for CCSF students decreased in the apprenticeship and advanced vocational courses, but increased for introductory vocational courses. Statewide, vocational course completion rates increased for all three areas. Finally, CCSF students in the 1995 cohort outperformed the statewide average for basic skills improvement. (JJL)
