This booklet is designed to be used by participants in the 1999 High School Counselors Training Program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. The program is divided into eight sessions that teach high school counselors how to help their students look for financial aid opportunities in higher education. Session One, "Introduction," discusses common myths and basic facts about student financial aid. Work study, loans, and grants are discussed. Counselors are taught how to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in Session Two, "Completing the FAFSA." Recent changes in the form are discussed and 34 commonly asked questions are answered in this section. Session Three, "Using the FAFSA on the Web," discusses the advantages and features of the Web-based form and provides step-by-step instructions for completing it. Section Four, "Getting the Results," explains what the central processing system does with the application data, the basic formula used to calculate the expected family contribution (EFC), how certain data elements affect the EFC, reviewing the student aid report and locating data, and making corrections. In Section Five, "What Does a College Do?," participants learn about federal verification, financial aid packages and how to interpret them, some special circumstances and how to handle them, and when students receive their aid. Session Six, "Where to Find Information," discusses the federal student aid information center, school shopping tips, scholarship search services, financial aid nights, and other available resources. Section Seven, "Case Studies," provides three case studies involving students applying for financial aid. All forms regarding financial aid are included as examples.
