Considering that, of the 250 million new cases of water-associated diseases reported every year, 75% occur in tropical, poor, rural areas and slum-outskirts of big cities, it becomes clear that water education is a priority. This booklet illustrates that early water education can benefit the entire community. Since habits related to water use are learned very early in life, children's water education is vital. Chapter 1 considers a guide to the planning of training programs attuned to local cultures. Chapter 2 reviews children's specific needs and activities. These constitute the entry points through which water education can be developed with the most rapid and positive effects both on children's health and on the health of their entire community. Chapter 3 highlights the specific needs of the most vulnerable segment of the community--infants and mothers. Chapter 4 focuses on some appropriate techniques for children to use in their homes that may draw their parents in and improve the family's well-being. Chapter 5 introduces ways of helping children improve their community's comprehensive protection. Chapter 6 suggests ways of educating children to take responsibility and actively participate in the collective changes that can promote health and environmental security. (Contains 16 references.)
