Although mentoring alone cannot remove all of the obstacles that many of the neediest youth face, it can be an extraordinarily important part of the solution. This book is intended as a guide for employers, community-based organizations, college students, senior citizens, or others who are interested in starting a mentoring program to help prepare adolescents for college attendance. In addition to practical information about starting and operating a program, interspersed throughout are examples of successful programs, as well as resources to call upon for more information and support. In many cases the experiences of these groups and organizations may be the most helpful resource for those developing a mentoring program. This guide is divided into three sections. Section 1 is devoted to questions and answers concerning mentoring programs. Section 2 provides guidelines for the development of mentoring programs, from the first steps of program planning to recruiting and training mentors to running and evaluating the program. Finally, Section 3 provides additional profiles and relevant resources to aid those interested in beginning such a program. (Author/MKA)
