This is the seventh annual report on transfers, degrees, and certificates awarded by California Community Colleges. Highlights include: (1) during the 1998-99 academic year, California community colleges awarded a total 64,030 Associate of Arts/Associate of Science (AA/AS) degrees and another 27,660 certificates requiring 18 or more semester units. Compared with the prior year, this represents a 3,022 (5.0%) increase in degrees and a 2,269 (8.9%) increase in certificates; (2) full-year transfers to the University of California totaled 10,161, a decrease of 49 (0.4%); (3) full-year transfers to the California State University amounted to 44,989, a decrease of 557 (1.2%) over the prior academic year; (4) districts awarding the largest number of AA/AS degrees included Los Angeles (4,872), Los Rios (2,510), and Ventura (2,409); (5) of the 27,660 certificates awarded, 13,951 (50%) required the equivalent of 30 to 60 credit units, followed by 10,950 (40%) of 15 to 29 credit units; (6) more women than men earned degrees and certificates; (7) women earned 55,430 (61%) of the degrees and certificates awarded, compared with 35,313 (39%) for men (after proration of unknowns); (8) the number of degrees and certificates earned by race/ethnic categories were: Whites, 42,790 (50%); Hispanics, 18,630 (22%); Asian/Pacific Islanders, 11,206 (13%); and Blacks, 6,747 (8%).
