Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significantdifference between the occurrence of vandalism in communityschools as compared with the occurrence of vandalism in non-communityschools.A survey instrument was developed and sent to a stratified sampleof community schools in Dade County, Florida. The stratified sampleof community schools was matched with a sample of corresponding non-communityschools which also received the survey instrument containingthirty-seven variables. To confirm the matching process, which wasperformed prior to the collection of the data, the survey instrumentcontained the capability to collect identifying demographic data. The completed instruments from the thirty matched pairs ofschools were coded and forwarded to the Florida Atlantic UniversityComputer Center for processing and analysis. The data were analyzedusing a multivariate analysis of covariance statistical program withthree covariates. Where multivariate significant differences werefound, univariate analysis of variance was completed to determine in which of the stratums of thirty-four variables of vandalism the significantdifferences occurred. Where univariate significant differenceswere found, the Wilks-Lambda criterion of multiple comparisons ofpairs of means adjusted for the three covariates was used to determinebetween which school type, geographic area, and school level significancewas achieved on the significant variables of vandalism.
