Summary: The synthesis, and some aspects of the resulting characterization,are described for a series of eight anion-radical salts, each withtetracyano-p-quinodimethan (TCNQ) as the acceptor and a substitutedpyridinium ion as the donor. Four closely related pyridinium ionswere used, and the simple (1 : 1) and complex (1 : 2) anion-radicalsalt of each were successfully prepared. Details of the special measuresnecessary for the modification of a given method of preparationand / or purification are discussed. A mechanism is proposed for theconversion of simple salts to salts of complex composition based upondisproportionation of the TCNQ anion-radical. Three of the saltsyielded single crystals large enough for studies of crystal morphology,and electrical conductivity. Conductivities of all eight salts, determinedon compactions, were measured as a function of temperature between300 and 100K. Apparently, within this series of compounds, the entirerange of conduction behavior-insulators, semiconductors, and apossible semimetal-has been achieved.
