Summary: Nigeria is a country in a hurry for development, but the lackof executive and technological capacity is a common phenomenon.Efforts to provide the right climate for the developmentand encouragement of indigenous expertise will go a longway to enhance the job satisfaction of employees, particularlypetroleum engineers in the petroleum industry, an industryrequiring a high level technology and the largest nationalrevenue earner. Concepts of motivation were used as a startingpoint to provide a broad integrative perspective to thestudy of job satisfaction of Nigerian Petroleum Engineers.Empirical results of comparison of job satisfaction of PetroleumEngineers in the private and public petroleum companiesin Nigeria highlight the areas needing attention to improvethe job satisfaction of these engineers. The results alsoshow the general characteristics of the private petroleumcompanies vis-a-vis the public petroleum companies as at thetime the study was made.
