Abstract: Inspired by the newly observed $X$4160 and $X$3915 states, we analyze themass spectrum of these states in different quark models and calculate theirstrong decay widths by the $^3P 0$ model. According to the mass spectrum ofcharmonium states predicted by the potential model, the states $\chi 03^3P 0,\chi 13^3P 1, \eta {c2}2^1D 2, \eta c4^1S 0$ all can be candidates forthe $X$4160. However, only the decay width of the state $\eta {c2}2^1D 2$in our calculation is in good agreement with the data reported by Belle and thedecay of $\eta {c2}2^1D 2\to D\bar{D}$, which is not seen in experiment, isalso forbidden. Therefore, it is reasonable to interpret the charmonium state$\eta {c2}2^1D 2$ as the state X4160. For the state X3915, although themass of $\chi 02^3P 0$ is compatible with the experimental value, thecalculated strong decay width is much larger than experimental data. Hence, theassignment of X3915 to charmonium state $\chi 02^3P 0$ is disfavored in ourcalculation.
