Abstract: Concrete subjected to combined compressive stresses and temperature loadingexhibits compressive strains, which are considerably greater than for concretesubjected to compressive stresses alone. This phenomenon is called transientthermal creep or load induced thermal strain and is usually modeled bymacroscopic phenomenological constitutive laws which have only limitedpredictive capabilities. In the present study a meso-scale modeling approach isproposed in which the macroscopically observed transient thermal creep resultsfrom the mismatch of thermal expansions of the meso-scale constituents. Themeso-structure of concrete is idealized as a two-dimensional three phasematerial consisting of aggregates, matrix and interfacial transition zonesITZ. The nonlinear material response of the phases are described by adamage-plasticity interface model. The meso-scale approach was applied toanalyze compressed concrete specimens subjected to uniform temperaturehistories and the analysis results were compared to experimental resultsreported in the literature.
